Free Wifi in Sydney

Someone finally did it.

I am sitting at a cafe in Newtown, writing this blog on the fly. Elated before I’ve even taken my first sip of caffeine, because I’ve just discovered they have free wifi courtesy of Unwired.

Big deal, you say sitting smugly in your UK or US local funky art house coffee shop, bar, gas station or free-standing Chinese take-out booth. For you wifi is like air -free, everywhere and taken for granted.

Not so in Sydney.

This is a true moment for celebration. The place is Gloria Jeans on King Street. And while they may be a chain, while they may top up their long blacks with hot water, and while they may have Beyonce’s greatest hits on 10 minute rotation, they have just found a new loyal customer.

I’ve seen these in other cafes like Vivo and some pubs too – all those mugs PAYING Telstra and Optus – stop now and change cafes!!!!!

There is one of these at a cafe called VIVO in the city, cnr George and King St. too… I wonder where else they are. I looked on the Unwired website but could not find anything about it – you’d think they would want to publicise it!!

Has anyone else seen one in their travels?

OMG!!! I cannot believe it. Thank you for sharing this. The dearth of free wifi spots in Sydney has been a big beef for me. One at last thank G*d almighty!

You can get it at the organic food place a bit closer to USyd, and at the Royal Hotel down on Abercrombie near Carriageworks.

There are heaps of places around where you can find it ‘free’ as in ‘they probably won’t notice/care’ if you don’t mind using someone else’s connection. If you have a mac just install kisMac.

The AB Hotel in Glebe and Kellys on King st Newton have the uConnect. So you can have a larger with your laptop !!!!

I’ve also seen a couple more around the place. There a nice little ilatian by the uni called, I think, something like Cafe Romano and they have it – does a good coffee too – Don’t you love “free wifi”

I’ve seen it all over – Strawberry X in Surry Hills has it – and the food and coffee is brilliant. Also Toukans in the food base off Elizabeth Street has it for sure.

My mate says he’s seen them Melbourne too!

    Wow, this is heaven!!!

Mickey’s cafe on Oxford Street Paddington offers the unWired solution too.

DigiKaf in Glebe also offers free wifi if you’re a member (which is awesome value without the free wifi)

Does anyone know if there is a google map mashup showing free wifi in Sydney?

  12. Kain Says:

I found the Google Map with all the hotspots! They’re everywhere…
